The Premise
Mulch is nutrition.
Most mulch is colored fence material — dyed, brittle, and as biologically useful as gravel. Scapes Super Mulch™ is an aged double-shred hardwood, screened for fines, that breaks down through the season into organic matter the soil actually uses.
It is a top-dressing and a soil amendment in one application. Two inches, refreshed annually, never piled against trunks. Volcano mulching kills more trees on the Gulf Coast than drought.
The bed gets cleaned and edged first; the mulch gets walked in by hand. The blend, the depth, and the application matter. All three.
What It Does
Four jobs, one application.
Two inches of the right material does work no other product on the property can do.
Holds water through the first hot spell.
Bare soil in Houston gives up its moisture by ten in the morning. Two inches of aged hardwood slows evaporation and keeps what the irrigation put down where the roots can still reach it. In August that is the difference between a plant that holds and a plant you replace.
Steadies the soil the roots live in.
Root zones do not fail from air temperature. They fail from swing. Mulch buffers the top four inches against a 98-degree afternoon and a 34-degree January night, which is the whole range a Gulf Coast bed has to survive in a single year.
Stops the seed already sitting in your beds.
Weed seed is in the soil right now, waiting for light. Mulch is not a herbicide, it is a blackout. Fewer weeds means less pulling, less chemical, and beds that stay composed between visits instead of only on the day we leave.
Feeds the soil while it dresses the bed.
This is where dyed mulch and Super Mulch™ part ways. Ours is aged and double-shredded, so it breaks down across the season into organic matter the soil biology actually eats. The bed is a little richer in October than it was in March. Colored fence material cannot say that.
The Two Windows
Mulch is half of a reset.
On our care programs mulch never travels alone. It is the third move in a sequence, and the sequence is what resets a property to Scapes standards.
The spring release.
Prune, weed and clean. Then mulch. Then fertilization. PWC + Mulch + Fert, in that order, because mulch laid over a dirty bed just hides the problem for a season. This is the first discretionary spend of the year and the one that makes everything after it look intentional.
The fall cleanup.
The same sequence with seasonal color added, ahead of the entertaining months. PWC + Mulch + Fert + Color, and the irrigation geared down for winter. Beds go into the holidays dressed, and into the cold protected.
